A Brief History
The Society was started in south Trinidad in 1895 by a group of
expatriats who were working with the oil companies and became
affiliated with the RSPCA in 1936.
We are now 111 years in existence in Trinidad and Tobago.
In 1936 the Society was
affiliated with the RSPCA (UK Royal Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals).
British Governors were Patrons of
the Society until we received Republican status and then presided
over by Mathieu Perez, the then Chief Justice.
Until 1962 the Society was a
Branch of the RSPCA and refered to as the RSPCA Overseas Associated
Branch.
In the early 60's, Mr. Robert Johnson founded the Tobago Branch and
the North Branch began to operate kennels at Tragarete Road, Port of
Spain.
The Branches are governed by an Executive Council and there are
currently three Branches operational, the largest being at our new
premises at Mucurapo Lands, St James,
Port of Spain.
The current Patron of the Society is President George Maxwell
Richards, and our Society Chairman is Mr. Hubert Dolsingh.
Operations
The Society is an NGO dedicated to the promotion and the welfare of
animals in T & T and provides such services as:
·
Re-homing of unwanted animals
·
Humane Euthanasia of terminally ill pets
·
Vet Treatments
· Spacious Boarding Kennels
·
Pick-up and Delivery
But our work is not just about cuddly puppies and kittens. As our
name "The T&T Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals"
suggests, we see too many cases of neglegt. As unpleassant as it may
seem, we have a duty to bring these cases to the attention of the
Public.
